Richmond is an attractive market town on the River Swale in North Yorkshire. Placed on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, it is the popular holidaymaker destination. A town was founded around 1071 per Norman, Alan Rufus, toward land granted to him by William a Vanquisher. Richmond Castle, completed inside 1086, consisted of a keep by using bulwarks encompassing a metropolitan area currently called the Market Place. A prosperity of the mediaeval market town & centre of the Swaledale wool industry greatly increased within a late 17th & Eighteenth centuries by using the burgeoning lead mining in nearby Arkengarthdale. These are from either this cycle that a town's attractive Georgian architecture originates, the virtually all notable examples of which are then to become detected within Newbiggin & in Frenchgate. Richmond is as well house to the Georgian Theatre, originally founded around 1788 per actor, Samuel Butler. Although the decline around a fortunes of theatre led to its closure around 1848, the Georgian Theatre was restored & reopened inside 1963, by having a theatre museum added in 1979. Further recently, a theatre has be a Georgian Theatre Royal and was extended in 2003.

A town of Richemont within Normandy (now in the Seine-Maritime département, Haute-Normandie region) was the origin of the title Richmond. This Richmond was a eponymic feoff of the Earls of Richmond (or comtes first state Richemont), the dignity unremarkably as well held per Duke of Brittany from 1136 to 1399. A constitutional ambiguity of Dukes of Brittany when liege of two France (in perfect of Brittany) and England (inside correct of Richmond) was a source of lot tension in Breton history, particularly in a period of the peachy Breton War of Succession. In the 17th century, the title of Duke of Richmond was given to a plebe branch of the regnant Stewart family, who besides held a Scottish title of Duke of Lennox. After this branch became out, a title was reconferred in an outlawed boy of Charles II, whose descendants prove my point to hang on to a title.

Richmond Castle situated in the town centre overlooking the Flow of any stream Swale occurs as major tourer attraction.

Richmond has become utilized as the motion-picture photography location for a important total of TV programmes & films including The Fast Show, Harry, Century Falls, All Creatures Great and Small amongst others.
